As a result of demand for a lighter, more portable machine, the Singer class 99 sewing machine was introduced in 1911. It did not need to be used in a special table.
The 99 was about 3/4 the size of the class 66 and used an identical mechanism and quite a few of the same parts. The 99K stayed in production until around 1958.
The Singer 99 was easy to use, sturdy, and reliable. It became very popular with occasional home users. At 22 lbs and in a storage case, it was more manageable than 'full size' machines.
In 1921, a Singer electric motor option became available making the 99K the first portable electric machine.
