    Description

    Native American Coast Miwok shamans medicine bowl. These small size mortars would be used to crush grind herbs to make medicine or for making a poultice. They are much rarer than the large size mortars used to process acorns. If you were to visit a Native American village hundreds of years ago there might be dozens of larger size mortars and only one or two medicine bowls in the village. Found on private property near the ancient village site olompali which was a major trading center and village site in the 1500’s. Here’s a picture of the small flat bottom mortar inside a larger 54 lb mortar and on top.mortar measures 4-1/4x4 inches wide x 2-1/2 inches tall and pestle is 3 inches long.
