American Indian Wampum Beads~Coast Salish People
Coast Salish People ~ Native American Sandstone Wampum Beads.
Brown Hand Carved Sandstone Wampum Beads.
Disc shaped sandstone. Beads average about 6mm -- just under 1/4 in. diameter and 2.3mm -- 3/32 in. thick.
Length: 8-1/8 in. of  beads, ca. 14 beads per inch equal to approximately 100 individually hand-carved stone beads. Strung recently into 9 in. bracelet for display, screw clasp--not worn--wearable with care as sandstone is relatively soft, brittle.  Remaining beads after having the double strand restrung into necklace.
    Comes with tag that reads:
"Fraser Midden Sandstone #5 Wampum, dug in 1907; soil tests show the midden was in existence in the 1st Century A.D."

The Great Fraser Midden, or Marpole Midden, was revealed in 1884 during road construction. Middens often consist of sea shells as well as bones, implements  & other cultural objects, essentially the ancient refuse heaps of First Nation villages. This one, however, turned out to be a major archaeological (re)discovery of a village that occupied a 3.5 acre site from about 1500 years ago until a couple centuries ago & known by its Musqueum name. The center of the midden is the parking lot of the old Fraser Arms Hotel & is up to fifteen feet deep in some places, making it a treasure trove of archaeological artifacts.
    --Past Tense, Vancouver.
Rare type, traditionally, Wampum were of shell not stone, each bead is a carving in & of itself, rather than slightly re-worked shell wampum beads.
