Description
This listing is for a Marantz 2238B Stereophonic Receiver with Black Face in excellent cosmetic and functional condition, rated at 38 watts per channel @ 8Ω with ≤ 0.01% THD.This unit is unique for several reasons:
1)
The Black Face.
While there are after marketers making black face plates for Marantz,
we have never seen the 2-piece faceplate required for this model.
It is in good (but not without some wear) condition, but does not appear to be of recent manufacture.
The inserts and button guides have the same glued in place look as originals.
2)
The Serial Number.
Below is an excerpt from a website that has done extensive research on Marantz serial and production numbers.
This unit has the letter “n” following the model number.
They are uncommon enough that they indicate the origin is “unknown, usually found in Europe”.
3)
Non-Dolby FM, Variable Voltage.
This is common with all units make for markets outside the US.
It allows easy conversion for use with 110/120/220/240 voltages. When obtained, this unit was set for 220 voltage, and had a plug intended to be used with that voltage.
We replaced the cord with an original Marantz cord and plug for use in the USA, reset the voltage to 120V, and replaced the fuse with the 4A as spec’d.
It is now ready for use, and was tested using standard AC as supplied in the USA.
4)
Units without the FM Dolby feature have a Low Filter instead, meaning this unit has a button that does something as opposed to one that does nothing
(there are no radio stations that broadcast in Dolby FM).
It features both the Signal Strength and FM Tuning Meter, as well as Pre-Out/Main-In rear RCA jacks that allow easy hook-up of graphic equalizers or other sound processors. It has been tested/serviced and is working.
All Dial and Meter lamps have been replaced with LED’s for long life, cool operation and improved brightness.
The Stereo lamp has also been replaced with an LED.
A good quality color copy of the Handbook of Instructions will be included.
Please note the manual is the USA version showing the Dolby FM option.
It is almost identical in outlining the use and features with that exception in mind.
The following outline covers the testing/service work done:
·
All speaker connections have been tested and are working, both right and left channels.
·
The tuner was tested using a simple wire antenna.
AM/FM radio stations were received as expected across the radio dial. Stereo and Dial Pointer lamps were working at time of testing.
·
Tape 1, Tape 2 and Aux inputs and outputs were tested and function as expected.
·
Phono input was tested and functions as expected.
·
The headphone jack was tested and is working.
·
All Switches and Potentiometers were flushed with contact cleaner, followed by treatment with the appropriate DeoxIt treatment.
·
The faceplate, dial scale and all knobs were removed, cleaned and hand polished.
·
All Meter and Radio Dial lamps were replaced with Cool Blue LED lamps.
·
The light-diffusing Velum paper behind the radio dial was replaced for color clarity.
·
Cleaning on all exterior surfaces was done to improve appearance.
·
The foam cushioning used on the underside of the metal top was replaced to ensure a better fit.
·
The power cord was damaged and not compatible with USA voltage.
It was replaced with a full length original Marantz cord/plug for use with 120V (as is used in the USA).
·
Any missing top cabinet or bottom plate screws were replaced.
·
All feet were inspected and replaced as needed.
·
DC Offset and Idle Current adjustments were set to factory specification.
·
Watts/channel was checked using a Peak and RMS Output Meter to meet/exceed model specs
·
A final extended use test was performed to ensure functionality

Marantz Production Numbers
(From AMK Products, inc)
1954 - 1980
There are two basic patterns.
1. Earlier units proceed in pure sequential order starting from zero or a specific starting number as follows:
0
for models 10, 24
1000
for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 8B, 9, 10B, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 20B, 22, 25, 26,27, 28, 29, 32, 105, 110, 115, 115B, 120, 120B, 125, 150, 240, 250, 250M, 500, 510M, 1200, 2010, 2015, 2200, 2240, 2245, 2270, 2440, 3300, 3600, 3800, 4060, 4100, 4220, 4230, 4240, 4270, 4415, 4430
10000
for 7, 7C, 7T
100000
for 2235, 2250B. Also some later units have a "J4" suffix which indicates the unit is equipped with a universal power transformer. Inside a terminal strip allows the unit to be switched between 100V, 120V, 200V, 220V, 240V voltage sources. 2. Later units are sequential but within only each
production run
. Example:
93
N
04
0085
. In this case "
04
" indicates the fourth production run and the last four digits represent the sequential
production number within this run
. When this method was adopted a letter was added to indicate the
region
of the world for which the unit was primarily intended to be sold:
A
= Australia
C
= Canada
E
= Europe
K
= Far East
N
= unknown, usually found in Europe
P
= Post Exchange
U
= USA. It appears that most if not all non - USA models include an external voltage selector which allows usage anywhere in the world. Later a
two digit prefix
was added to replace the manufacturing date stamp that was formerly found on the chassis. The first digit indicates the year, we believe the second digit indicates the six week period within the year. The following models overlap both numbering systems: 112, 140, 1030, 1040, 1060, 1070, 1090, 2215, 2215B, 2225, 2230, 2235B, 2275, 2325, 4300, 4400. When the change was made the production run number started at the correct number (indicating they were keeping track).
