Description
From the estate of a western Pennsylvania antiques dealer retired to Tucson during the 1990's (and my office closet these last twenty plus years) is this really nice Hohokam grooved shaft straightener stone. The visually appealing example is of a relatively dense heavy stone, nicely shaped and a bit larger than typically seen - it sort of resembles an attractive very plump coffee bean. I've seen other Hohokam and Casas Grandes examples of this same general configuration, though the amount of work invested here puts this above the majority of those. While the gentleman in question dealt primarily in 19th Century antique American stoneware and redware and country French ceramics, he apparently had a personal interest in mid-Atlantic, midwest, and southern Arizona artifacts. The collected Hohokam material was almost all Pima County, and would have been surface collected years ago on private property with permission in what were then relatively rural areas (read undeveloped ranch land) in the Tucson basin. Sites abound here. Weight is about 693 grams on my portable digital scale - again, heavy. Condition is quite good, with well patinated surfaces surfaces giving evidence of a long undisturbed sojourn on the ground. The groove is pronounced and shows appropriate signs of old use wear. There is a weathered over nick to one corner of the underside, an ancient occurrence. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is about 4 1/8 in. long and 3 1/4 in. wide. About 2 in. vertical, bottom side to the grooved top surface. If you have interest in the material culture of the American Southwest in pre-Columbian times, and prefer something from an old collection, this will have great meaning for you.Payment Terms
