Really Nice Handmade Stone Native American "MORTAR", Used to Mix Paint and Food, Start FiresD
ESCRIPTION:
Scans show all.....unusual large handmade stone Native American MORTAR. Made with deep round concave depression in the center of one side. This was used to grind corn or mix various foods together. Could also have been used to mix dry paint components to achieve a particular color. Would have been used with a stone pestle. JUST LIKE THE MODERN MORTAR AND PESTLES USED TODAY BY PHARMACISTS TO MIX CHEMICAL AND COMPONENTS FOR VARIOUS DRUGS.
Deep enough that it also could have been used in starting fires. They used a wooden stick with a bow to create friction, create heat, and catch tinder on fire. The stick could have been set up to rotate in the depression.
In any event, a very nice, unusual archaic Native American item. This was found in northern Virginia on private land with owner's permission. It is part of an old collection I acquired, some of the items that are dated during the 1920's. A nice early collection.
Appears to be an appropriate sized stone that they modified to fit the hand, before adding the depression. Depression is deep, and matches the stone (age), and was clearly done many many years before it was found. PROBABLY AT LEAST SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS OLD, and likely many centuries older than that. Measures about 5 1/2" x 4" x 2 1/2".
A great piece for any collection, and especially for someone in Virginia. Also would be a great and unusual gift for a pharmacist!! Especially timely with Christmas coming.
