    Description

From the estate of a western Pennsylvania antiques dealer retired to Tucson during the 1990's (and my office closet these last 20 plus years) is this ancient pecked stone discoidal. While the gentleman in question dealt primarily in 19th Century American and antique country French ceramics, he apparently had a personal interest in mid-Atlantic states, midwest, and southern Arizona artifacts. The offered example was lumped with Hohokam things at the estate sale, though does not appear to be of that culture - it looks more like a midwest or eastern object to me.  I've been told these functioned as game stones. The hard stone disk is actually shaped sort of like a plump round biscuit with peck work dimpling to the center of each face. The central depression is a more pronounced on one side, though both faces definitely show the effort. While there are such thing as Hohokam discoidal stones,  the ones I've seen from around here are generally thinner and wider - a different shape than this one. Be aware the general topic is not an area of extreme expertise for me, so I'm willing to be schooled regarding this object. That said, I am certain it is genuine. Condition is quite good, with well patinated surfaces giving nice evidence of years on the ground - speaking to an undisturbed rest for hundreds or perhaps thousands of those years. There is a small plow or shovel mark from the finding near the edge of one face, serving to reveal the stone's appearance without the accrued patination. A look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is about 3 1/8 in. across at the greatest and 3 1/16 in. at the least (that seems pretty round to me). About 2 3/4 in. thick. If you have interest in the material culture of pre Columbian America, and simply wish for a very cool paperweight the mall does not carry, this will have great meaning for you.
