Authentic, old, very well made, slate pendant. Made by Late Archaic (Woodland) peoples (approx. 2,000 - 1,200 years before present) in the Midwest. Some of the cultures who made stone pendants during the Woodland Period are Glacial Kame, Adena, Hopewell, and Fort Ancient. Includes some well developed, highly stylized, and finely made types (rare and difficult to obtain). Variety of fine to very fine slate

    *Please, note!*
Artifact has been altered by me. Won at auction from Jackson Galleries. Artifact had been mounted to a board with glue and surface covered with shellac. Mounting artifacts with glue and protecting them with shellac was a common method used to display collections many years ago. Unfortunately, many fine artifacts were damaged and destroyed as a result.
Apparently, piece was pried from the surface it was affixed too with a metal tool (screwdriver or putty knife). As a result, end was broken into a jagged edge. Disturbed me too see a fine cultural relic in this condition or state so, I enlisted aid of a friend and acquaintance to salvage and make into jewelry. Experienced lapidary carefully ground edges and polished minimal amount. Goldsmith made harness so, piece may be worn as pendant / jewelry. Pendant has not been worn since being remade. Do not believe in altering authentic old artifacts, but have salvaged many over many years / made into jewelry / given as presents or gifts. Like to think, ancient who made it would be flattered and grateful to be remembered 1,800 years later. Know I would!
Pendants and Gorgets (Two Hole pendants) are cultural relics that may have helped identify the social status, position, or hierarchal rank of the bearer to the people around them. They are indicative of social structure and order. These pieces are an artistic form of self-expression made by by enlightened peoples with well developed cultures who admired the beauty of the world around them. Attention was paid to selection of stone, care in manufacturing, and attention to detail. They represent changes in tradition and changes in style over time. Shapes may represent a variety of forms in nature and have esoteric meaning.
Pieces exhibit wear and damage consistent with use, damage by frost, and agricultural or farm equipment.
All well patinated and lifetime guaranteed to be authentic.
Most are isolated (or stray) finds surface collected with care by gentlemen on private property. Some found many years ago.
