Vintage 1950's Ampex Model 008 (502) AM/FM Radio Receiver Tuner TESTED & WORKING
-(see pics) Back of chassis Serial Number black ink stamped #7129 also black ink stamped "5 02"
The "5 02" ink stamp was I believe an Ampex reference/catalog # for this named model Ampex 008 .
Apparently Ampex named model 008 when installed in Ampex Signature Consumer Home Consoles and then also
named it Ampex 502 when sold for commercial
installations
.
For reference: The Original Technical Sam's photofacts (Detailed SKU, Parts List, Operating Values, Diagramed Assembly/Disassembly)from the 1950's for this Ampex model 008 is actually listed as "Ampex 502 AM/FM Tuner" in the Sam's catalog. (The Sam's photofacts is NOT included in this sale but can be found on ebay for around -), The correct Howard W. SAMS Photofact Folder (date 9-59, Set 457, Folder 3). Details including SKU can be found (
radiomuseum dot org/r/ampex_502.html )
-This model was used in the premium Ampex Signature Consoles Models from the 1950's. This unit was pulled from an early Ampex Signature Console.
-We believe the Ampex 008/502 was manufactured from 1955 through late 1959-early 1960.
- Estimated
date of manufacture mid to late1950's. The original Power supply is machine stamped and dated late 1953.
-This Ampex 008 / 502 AM/FM Tuner never came with a cover as it was designed to be installed into commercial 24/7 operations and into the Ampex Signature Console models either for Vertical or Horizontal
CONSOLE Mounted
installations. Simply stated : Covers hinder air-flow which makes tubes burn out faster.
Cosmetic and Mechanical Condition :
- Please see all pics for Cosmetic condition, excellent condition for being 65 years old)
- Mechanical Condition
USED all Knobs turn and all Switches function, All 17 Tubes were TV7 Tested (14 tubes tested Excellent+ to NOS+ condition all made in the USA tubes + 3 Amperex Bugle Boys Holland original tubes -tested) The AM/FM TUNER has been TESTED and is WORKING as DESIGNED, Dial chords are strong both AM and FM red needles move and sit on the correct radio station number bands(calibrated by sight). Several local AM and FM stations came in loud and clear with just a minimal simple short wire antenna.
-We cleaned the pots and switches with Deoxit 5 contact cleaner and lube. Cleaned all tube sockets with CDC QC quick dry electrical contact cleaner as well as the back RCA input jacks and connectors.
-Right side of the bare metal Chassis frame was written on in black magic marker "FM Tuner", this can be removed with a soft cloth, lighter fluid and lots of rubbing.
-As with all vintage original electronics that are 60+years old we are selling this unit AS-Described and AS-IS condition with NO Warrantee and NO Guarantee and NO Returns, Consider this unit
as Currently Working for future repairs or for parts.
"This AM/FM Radio receiver- Tuner was made for 24/7 operation as in studio monitoring, commercial 24/7 background music, etc.
The Ampex 008 was/were part of a high quality Ampex
Signature
Console Model home systems. Extreme reliability was the focus
and all components were top quality. A unique feature was
simultaneous
reception of AM and FM. Two tuners! It is FM mono but there is a multiplex input for an Ampex multiplex adapter (not included the
AMPEX model 520 MPX decoder
)."
"
The unit appears to be "all quality" with 6 tubes in the FM section, 5 tubes in the AM section, + 2x 12AU7s/+ 1x 12AT7 tubes, and Amperex EZ-80 rectifier - 15 tubes.+ 2 Amperex Tuning Eye tubes The AM has a dual bandwidth control . Because of its parallel AM and FM outputs it was probably from the short simulcast stereo era that used an AM station and an FM station.
There is a single 5-pin phenolic socket that may have your 600 ohm output.
The FM lineup of tubes is 6BK7, 6AB4, 3-6AU6s (evidently I.F.s) and 6AL5.
The AM lineup is 6BA8, 2-6BA6s, 6BE6, and a final 6BA6.
There is one 12AT7 and two 12AU7 as output tubes and two AMPEREX BB tuning eye tubes on the AM and FM dial. There are separate AM and FM tuning knobs, and even better an AM Sharp/Broad control."
